Metropolis - by Fritz Lang

Metropolis - by Fritz Lang

The 1927 science fiction film Metropolis created by Fritz Lang, is a commentary on the politics, poverty, conflict, and fears for the future during the days of Germany’s Weimar Republic.

Rated as one of the best sci-fi movies of all time, Lang’s futuristic dystopian city was inspired by New York’s towering skyscrapers, Art Deco, Bauhaus, and Futurism.

Its stunning special effects and set design were ground-breaking and a significant achievement in 1927.  This came at a cost making Metropolis the most expensive film ever made.

Metropolis launched to mixed reviews. Whilst critics applauded the cinematic art and visual effects, they denounced the ‘trite’ storyline.  The epic film fared poorly at the box office and promptly disappeared.

But Metropolis had not been forgotten.  It went on to inspire artists, directors, and writers throughout the 20th century: Star Wars’ C-3PO looks uncannily like the Metropolis robot Maria.

The films influence can still be seen in pop culture and in Manga and Marvel movies bringing Metropolis to new generations.
