Cabaret Fledermaus opened in Vienna in 1907, co-founded by a group of artists of the Wiener Werkståtte (Vienna Workshop) and architect Josef Hoffmann. It was a space for live performance and artistic experimentation including drama, poetry, music, and dance.

The cabaret was promoted through posters and programmes designed by eminent artists of the time including Bertold Loffler, Carl Otto, Moritz Jung, and Fritz Lang.

The club space was colourful with extravagant tiled walls designed by Bertold Loffler, a geometric floor and elaborate sets and costumes.

Whilst only a few sketches, postcards and photographs of the club survive, it was reimagined in full colour and installed at the Barbican in London in 2020.

Cabaret Fledermaus closed its doors to the public in 1913, yet it was the inspiration for clubs that sprung up across Europe during the 1920s and 1930s, including Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich and the nightclubs of Weimar Germany.
